Proposal ideas on a budget

A smaller plan is a real plan. The ring, if you buy one, is a separate budget.

"On a budget" is a choice you make, not a category with a correct dollar amount. The labels on this site (under $500, $500–$2,000, $2,000 and up) are buckets for filtering ideas. They are not averages.

Separate the ring from the hour

If you are buying a ring, that money is not the same as dinner. The Knot's 2026 Real Weddings Study reported an average engagement-ring spend of $4,600. Source: press release, accessed October 10, 2026. People also propose with a less expensive ring, a family ring, or no ring. The study average is context, not a bill.

The ring buying guide is a draft on how to shop. It does not tell you what to spend.

A small plan that still feels finished

  • A walk you already take, then a question, then food you cook or pick up.
  • A reserved table at a place you both know. Ask the restaurant what they need from you. Do not assume they will clear a room. (to verify)
  • A sunrise you have checked, and a coat.

Skip fireworks, drones, and anything that needs a permit you do not have. Those are how small plans become expensive and unsafe.

What to say if you are worried it looks plain

Plain is not an apology. You can say, "I wanted it to be just us." You do not owe a production.
